  • Changing Drive ratios implications

What is the implications of using a 1.65 ratio drive on my 140 engine?

    The original 140 has a 1.98 ratio.

Will it improve/degrade the performance of my boat?

I was told it will pull better for skiing with a 1.65 ratio.

    Boat is a 1977 AMF Crestliner 17' with 140 4 cyl.

    Thanks!

    Houptee,
Most people just have a couple of different props. One for cruising and one for skiing or tubing. I don't see any reason to switch ratios, just try a prop that is a couple of inches less on the pitch for skiing. Just remember that you won't want to run full throttle with the ski prop on, or you will over rev the engine.
