I was looking at my older Nova with Alpha SS drives and I couldn't help but admire how clean the trim cylinders looked. Maybe they weren't as advanced (in terms of returning to position after hitting something -- luckily I never hit anything) but those trim cylinders had no external metal tube to connect to the other hydraulic fitting - both fittings connected close to each other at the transom assembly end of each trim cylinder - just gave a clean impression compared to the new ones.

Any thoughts? What is the advantage of the new one with the external tube going to the other end of the cylinder?

I think the only real advantage would be that it is easier to make with the external line. The old ones still have to have a passage way running on the inside of the cylinder to the aft end. I imagine it was difficult to drill that long hole, so they decided to make it external.
