  • Another Gear Ratio Question

I have a 1984 Mercrusier 898 with damaged gears in the upper gear assembly. I need to know what gear ratio to use. I live in Nebraska.

The boat has a 198 HP 305 V8 Chevy Engine.

Should I also replace the lower unit? Very little metal shavings made it down through the lower unit so I think it will be ok, but what do you think?

    Thanks....

Looking forward to getting back on the water!

Even with damaged gears you should be able to count the teeth. If it is 20-22 then it is a 1.47. If it is 24-24 then it is a 1.65.

As far as reusing the old lower, you should be okay, but I would try to flush it out to get any possible metal out of it.
