  • SEI 116 "banging" when put in reverse

    Hello,
Just purchased a used Rinker with a SEI116 installed on the port side engine in 2006, according to the previous owner. During sea trail, the PO put the port drive in reverse and we all heard and felt a very loud banging until shifter was shoved into full power reverse. I disconnected the shifter cable and shifted the drive by hand using the cable from the outdrive. No Banging! Spent many hours fine tuning shifter cable adjustment and still get the Banging. Really sounds like the outdrive is going to break right off the boat! Is there another adjustment in the outdrive itself that would reduce cable travel?
    Any suggestions?
Boat is being pulled for new impellor tomorrow and would like to get this shifting issue fixed also.

    Thanks,

    Steve

The problem is in either the shift cable or remote control. Check the shift cable for any sharp bends and inspect the end pivot points for corrosion. Check your remote to see that it is moving the cable freely. Recheck your shift cable adjustment. Something has to be binding in the upper shift cable.
