gear swap

I have a 305 V-8 with 1.62-1 upper gears
I'm in need of a new outdrive,my friend has on off a 4cyl. motor
Can I just change the upper gear ratio to what I need??
Is the rest of the Alpha One generation 1 the same

You can switch the gears and the rest of the drive is the same with possibly one exception. The 4 cylinder drive might have the short input shaft. The short input shafts were 8 1/8" long while you would need the 9 9/16" length.
