Installed SE106 full unit on 82 Searay 24ft
but at first had problem getting over 2000 rpm at full throttle. Compression check showed that wasn't problem and correct prop at 17. Problem fixed somewhat w new plugs/points/timing and boat got up to slightly over 3000 rpm. However, at 300 she overheated. When mechanic pulled the hose from
outdrive, there was no/very little water pumping in.
Looking like the water pump/impeller damaged.
Question is - could this be a defective part, or was this caused by
something else - fy, didn't have problem w overheating before this, but
prior owner did have thermostat removed when we checked after overheat.
    Any comments on this on?

Impeller damage is caused by lack of water to the pump. This can happen very quickly.
