  • Just the lower?

I have a 1998 Baja 192 with a 305ci engine and an Alpha 1 Gen II drive (gear ratio unknown) all with about 250 hours. It's been a good runner but now she's seen her end. I had the skeg replaced and aluminum prop fixed after running aground but now I wrapped my anchor and anchor rode around my prop until it broke my skeg again and cracked the planing fin.

I plan on getting the new lower but my question is when do you know if the upper is bad? Mine seems fine w/o any noise or vibration although I think I do need a new gimbal bearing.

    Thanks!

You can inspect the upper gears for signs of excessive wear. Remove the four allen cap bolts on the upper cap and remove it and you will see the drive and driven gears. You will have to drain a small amount of oil to see them. You can then also count the teeth on the two gears to find the ratio of your drive. Refer to the technical articles section here in the forum and go to gear ratio changes for a list of the teeth counts.
