  • Seeking Oil Changing Advise

I am approaching 10 hours on my SEI outdrive, and want to purchase the best outdirve oil for my first oil change.

Should I use natural or synthetic oil? Any brand or weight recommendations?

Also, my boat has an oil reservoir in the engine compartment. Can I fill the oil from through the reservoir, or do I need to pump it in from the bottom drain plug?

    Thanks for your help.

We recommend Mercruiser High Performance gear lube.

To fill a unit with the bottle you should first drain the unit and the bottle. The bottle is slow to drain, so just let it drain overnight. Then pump the oil into the bottom plug until it comes out the top plug. Then reinstall the top plug and then the bottom plug. Then remove the top plug and pour oil into the bottle. When oil starts coming out of the top plug that means you have removed all of the air from the hose. Then reinstall the top plug and make sure the oil is to the full line on the reservoir.

Has any side by side comparison been done between the Mercruiser/Quicksilver and the Lubrimatic Power Pro gear lube?
