Gimbal ring removal

How do you remove the gimbal ring. I removed the two upper bolts from the gimbal ring. There does not seem to be enough clearance to remove the gimbal ring. Any ideas?

To remove the gimbal ring you will need to remove the swivel pin which is connected to the steering shaft. Do do that you need to drill two holes on the sides of the gimbal housing. Mercruiser make a special kit that has a drilling template and plugs to plug the holes back up. You will also need to get a tap to tap the holes. Any Mercruiser dealer should be able to get the kit for you.
