Question regarding MC A1 problem

Hello, I am new to boating and recently purchased a 24' Rinker Captiva 232. It came with the 5.0 Merc and an Alpha One outdrive. I was cruising along around 3500rpm when suddenly the boat slowed and the motor revved up. I immediately killed the engine. (Felt like someone depressed the clutch, if a boat had a clutch). Anyways, the boat started and seemed like it ran fine afterwards.

My question is, if I were to replace the outdrive what should I replace it with? Im not sure how to tell what gearing I have, or what I would need.


Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It might be a bad prop hub, or a bad coupler, so I wouldn't buy a new drive just yet. Click on the search tab above and do a search for "coupler". You will find a few threads talking about that issue.
