  • prop shaft end play

I know ya'll are the gurus of lower units. I ahve a 1999 Merc 225 EFI w/3/8" of end play. Mer says .045 is the max. We took it apart & found anything wrong. I checked all the places tha Merc says could cause this problem. But it all is fine. Is it possible (just a guess) that the shft is the wrong one for my motor? Thanks. I can use all the advice that I can get.

Propshaft endplay is a byproduct of the location of the gears. If the backlash is set properly, and there is no excessive wear on the propshaft or reverse gear thrust washer, then I think you are okay. In my experience the propshaft endplay varies quite a bit. Check out some other 3 liter motors and compare to yours. Also, make sure you actually measure the end play on your unit. Trying to eyeball it is near impossible. And remember a standard rotation unit will have more than a counter rotation.
