  • Alpha1gen1 Convert to Counter Rotating

I am getting confusting responses to this .
I have a pair of 20 Hr old merc remans of Alpha 1 gen1 Drives. Both are Std rotation.

    I wish counter rotation drives.
Can the lower unit not be modified to counter rotate?

    What would you do.?

    Thanks

A standard rotation lower cannot be made to counter rotate unless you redo the internals. Also if the case is an older unit it may not accept the counter rotation internals. The reverse gear in your standard lower unit is very weak and does not have any thrust support. If you were to put much of a load on it the gear and bearing would fail quickly.

A counter rotation has a stronger gear and different bearings to take the load.

We do offer an affordable counter rotation unit, so you could purchase one from us to replace the standard lower on your port engine. You would also need to change the throw of your shifter and put a left hand propeller on.
