  • very noisy outdrive

just installed the unit on my 5.0L merc and took it for a ride to break it in. it shifts fine and idle is no problem but when cruising at 3500 rpm, it is extremely noisy. Must be gear noise and it get worse at higher rpm. this morning, I checked the oil and it was good and blue and not burned and a little metal shaving at the magnet. took it out again this morning and it sounded better. Is this a problem or expected. I heard the gears are made in china and are not lapped and that is the source of noise.

The units are generally noisy during the break in period. It will quiet down over the first 10-15 hours. The gears are not made in china, they are forged from U.S. steel and cut in Taiwan on gleason machines. They are not lapped, which is why there is some noise to them.
