  • Gear oil in gimbal housing

    Hi!

Today I was doing gear oil change at approx 12 hours for my new OMC to SEI conversion. Gear oil was almost like new, some "metal dust" in it, but i guess that's because of the breaking in. But what I noticed is that I had approx. a tablespoon of gear oil in the gimbal housing, under the shift cable bracket. Is the driveshaft seal leaking? The drive was filled at the drain plug with marine gear case oil (SAE 90) until it started pouring out of the upper plug.

I would suggest when filling the drive, that after you get all the plugs put back in take the top plug out and let any residual oil run out. It should be filled to the bottom of the plug. If it has extra there may not be enough room to expand and it will push out somewhere.

Do that and then check it again and see if the problem goes away. It may also be prudent to pressure test the drive if you have the capability.
