  • stalling when put in gear

we purchased the 106 in may 2006 only have about 15 hrs on it-it was overheating last year we were sent a new water pump -now it starts up fine and sounds good till you put it in gear it stalls out (reverse and drive both)

I suspect you have a bad shift cable going from the engine to the drive. You can unhook the cable to see if it moves freely.

      stalling when put in gear

everything is ok with the shift cable-still stalling when put into gear we are hoping when the bad water pump had to be replaced it didnt do damage to the upper unit??
any other ideas what this problem is?

Is it possible that when the water pump was changed that the Brass shift lever was not oriented properly to the lower shift shaft?

To verify that the shift cut out switch is what is stalling the engine watch the shift bracket while shifting it and see if the switch is tripped. If it is, then there is something causing tension in the shift system. It is usually the shift cable, but could be the alignment of the shift lever if it was not installed properly.

If the shift cutout switch is not tripping then I would be looking at the carb. Possibly the idle is set to low or the low speed circuit of the carb is plugged.
