  • brass shift shaft problem

We purchased an SE106 lower unit and removed the old one this morning. Following Instruction great until we are to install new brass shift shaft. We can't figure out how to remove the old one. The piece above the shaft is not allowing it to come out. I put the boat in forward. What could our problem be? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Kyle

    brass shift shoe

I assume you mean the part that goes into the mating shoe by the exaust.
The complete drive is removed first, split the units, remove the cotter pin, washer, and the shoe lifts up and out.

If you are just changing the lower without removing the upper you can just reuse the old shift shaft. They are interchangeable.
