  • gear ratio

Hi, I have a 1987 sea ray amberjack 270 w/ t-165 merc. Owners manual says gear ratio of 1.84 to 1 but on the lower unit it is stamped 1.98R. What is the proper ratio?
    Thanks

If it is a V6 engine or a 3.7L 4 cyl, then it is typically a 1.84. You can always check by pulling the top cover and counting the teeth. A 1.98 is 20-24 for the tooth count and a 1.84 is 17-19.
