  • spun coupler

We have a 1984 Chaparral Mercruiser 260hp V8. This past weekend we were out trolling put boat in neutral to check line. After checking we were going to speed up. Pushed the throttle down. Boat would not go in forward or reverse. Pulled unit and noticed shaft had metal on it. U-joints are fine when looking up in the transom, looks like we spun coupler. Any advice on best way to replace.

    coupler

Remove the drive first, then lift up/remove the engine, rear motor mount housing, R/R the coupler, reinstall engine, realign engine, install drive. There is a site for downloading the correct Mercruiser manual for your engine.
www.iboats.com, boating forums, Mercruiser, volvo,OMC and other I/O`s,"Adults Only " section, about the 10th post down.

So you are saying we need to pull the engine out of the boat? We read in one of the manuals, we would not need to do that. We could go in from the back after pulling the outdrive, transom and housing.

It is exactly as Bt Doctur described. There is no other way to do it other than removing the engine. The engines are extremely easy to remove, you just need the proper lifting mechanism.
