How hot is too hot?

Hello,
I own a 1988 searay 230 weekender with a Mercruiser 260 and Alpha One Drive. How hot is too hot as far as temperature readings on the gauge? The therm is a 145 degree running on a closed heat exchanger system. At a steady 3000 rpm cruise the engine temp goes up to around 190; but remains in the green scale. Is this normal or excessive?

That does seem a little high, but also those gauges are not known to be the most accurate. If possible, I would use an infrared temp gauge shooting at the bottom of the thermostat housing and see what it reads.
