  • difficulty shifting out of forward

often it is difficult to shift out of forward. the rear shift cable has been replaced.

I would check that the shift cutout switch is working. Does it shift okay out of the water? With the boat running, trip the shift cutout switch and see if the engine dies, if it doesn't, the switch is probably bad.

It is when the boat is under load. shifts fine out of the water or when engine is off. funny though it does not trip the cutoff switch.

Then I would guess the switch is mis adjusted. Please email tech@sterndrive.cc and ask for the shift document and hopefully that will help you.

has nothing to do with the switch. it has been disconnected. the resistance is mechanical. its just hard to shift when under load. can it be the lower unit?

The switch MUST be connected and adjusted properly to shift it out of gear. That is why the resistance is mechanical. The switch kills the engine for a split second to relieve the load on the clutch dogs. Must be fun to dock.

Vail426 is correct. If the switch is not working properly, it will be very difficult to shift out of gear when it is in the water. On land it will work fine.
