  • stripped gears in upper unit

I HAVE A 1992 BAYLINER WITH A 3.0 MERCRUISER, ALPHA 1, GENERATION II OUTDRIVE, SERIAL # 00641975. WE THINK DUE TO INCORRECT OIL LEVEL, WE HAVE RUINED THE UPPER DRIVE GEARS. AFTER PULLING THE TOP COVER OFF (WHERE THE OIL LEVEL DIPSTICK IS), I CAN SEE BOTH GEARS ARE STRIPPED SLICK. CAN YOU ADVISE THE CORRECT UPPER UNIT NEEDED, AND IF ANY OTHER GASKETS, ETC. WOULD BE NEEDED IF I USE THE EXISTING LOWER UNIT?
    THANKS FOR YOUR HELP?

If you count the teeth in the lower housing we should be able to tell if it is a 1.98 or 2.00, you could look on the side of the upper unit and see if the ratio is stamped on the drive or call your local mercruiser dealer with the serial number and they will be able to look up the drive for you and let you know the ratio.

    Thank you,
