  • Lining up the shift shafts

    We are in England.
We are in the process of fitting a SE106 Sterndrive.
The Mercruiser manual says that when lining up the shift shafts prior to installing the sterndrive forward must be selected and then the prop turned counter clockwise “until it locks”. Does this mean that it locks when turning counter clockwise whilst still in forward gear and if so how many turns should be expected before locking? Is there anything else we should be wary of?

Any assistance will be much appreciated.

Basically you are turning the shift shaft clockwise to engage forward and at the same time turning the propshaft counter clockwise until it stops. Once the gear shift is locked in forward the propshaft should only turn at the most 70 degrees until it locks up. It may turn less depend ing on the exact orientation of the clutch while you are turning it.
