knocking

i am a little worried about my se106.i started the motor for the first time with my new outdrive and it seams to be knocking. i can feel it every time it knocks if i put my hand on the top of the upper unit. it also gets warm to the touch in about 2 minutes at idle. i am new to boating so im not sure if this is normal. should there be a small knocking that you can feel if touching the top of the upper unit? and hear? also was 90 weight gear lube the correct choice?

You should drain the gear lube and use Mercury high perfomance gear lube. The knocking is hard to diagnose in a forum. Please call our technical support at 813-925-7127 between 8AM & 5PM Eastern Time, M-F.
