hey Im considering buying a new lower to replace mine that i cracked, I have a 1977 mercruiser 140, I dont know If its an "R" or a alpha. will the new one fit on both or do I need to get the whole assembly. also when I pulled off the lower half I noticed that the shaft is smooth, I think the spines are broke off In the top part how can I get them out?

Our SEI 106 will bolt to your upper. You can try using a long drill bit and drilling a hole in the broken off piece and put in a self tapping screw. That will give you something to pull on with needle nose pliers. If the drive shaft twisted off, the upper may have some damage to the gears. I would pop the cap off the upper and inspect them.
