I pulled out the shifter rod assembly and cant seem to get it back in properly. normally the rod wont move freely from left to right unless you turn it which engages the geras. after replacement I found that it goes every which way and the gears dont seem to catch. this lower unit is a gen 2. Do I have to line up the splines in a certain way or what ? can anyone help me? thanks to those who can.. also e-mail me if thats eaisier grimmskmmm@hotmail.com

The shift shaft must go into the splines of the shift crank. You need to carefully insert the shaft and "feel" for it to go into the crank. You should then feel the crank swing. You will need to turn the shift shaft clockwise and rotate the prop shaft counter clockwise until it locks. Then carefully pick up the shift shaft while keeping pressure on the prop shaft and align it to point straight forward and slide it back into the crank.
