  • frozen gimbal bearing

I am trying to remove the se 106 unit on a 1997 Chris-Craft mid-engine boat, and belive I have a frozen gimbal bearing. Cannot remove the drive unit- it will only pull away about 1/2 inch, then stuck. Opened top cap of upper unit following Seloc guide to remove drive shaft retaining nut for horizontal drive shaft going into bell housing of gimbal, but there is not a nut holding the bearing set onto the vertical drive shaft where they would go into the cap mounted bearing race. Cannot get to drive shaft nut to remove with those bearings in the way. How do I remove them without damaging them?

    gimbal

A frozen bearing normally indicates a bad boot that allowed water to enter.
Make sure your in FWD gear first, the shift shoe should face bow to stern.
The only place to apply pressure is between the middle and bottom mounting studs using hard wood wedges on each side to drive the unit outward. If the bearing is indeed frozen to the shaft the bearing will come out at the same time. DO NOT USE STEEL ITEMS, you`ll damage the mounting surfaces.
