  • How to determine age of alpha 1 drive?

Hello all. new to the site.

    I have a 1984 Formula with a 260 merc.

The R drive was stolen around the 1990-1991 time frame, so I dont
know how to determine which Alpha 1 drive I have to order parts to replace
the water pump and input and output shaft seals.

Are any special tools needed to replace those seals, and is it difficult?

I have not used the boat for several years and looking her over.

    Thanks,

    Larry

If the driveshaft on the lower unit has a pin, it is the R style. If id does not have a pin it is an alpha. We do not make water pimps for the R style.

Seals do require special tools to change out, although some people might attempt it with regular tools.

      Thanks for the quick reply.

I am trying to determine how to tell if it's pre or post 1990 Alpha 1
so I know which to order parts for.

      Thanks

For an 84, a post 91 drive would not fit, so my original answer would be correct. The only variable would be if someone changed the transom assembly. If that were the case look at the way the trim cylinders mount. If they have nuts on the end of the trim pins it is a pre 91, if it has clips then it is post 91.

Thank you very much. The transom assembly is original.
