  • New SE106 Shift Shaft Problems

Recently received a New SE106 complete outdrive. Assembly was easy preparing the unit for installation, however, when attempting to slide the shift arm into the shift control arm the alignment was out. I have taken the shift arm off and moved one spline over and it is out as well the other way.
Any recommendations on what it might be?

Are you rotating the propshaft while rotating the shift shaft to make sure you are fully engaged into gear?

Yes, the prop shaft was rotated when rotating the shift shaft making sure it was fully engaged.

If you imagine the brass lever pointing straight ahead as 12:00 in forward gear, what time would you say yours is pointing at? If it is not 12:00 I would recommend calling the warranty department at 813-925-7127

When fully engaged in forward, the brass shift lever is pointing at about 11:00. when you remove the brass shift lever and change it one spline over, it points at 1:00.
Based on your designation and orientation, it is not possible for this shift lever to achieve 12:00. I have even changed the brass shift lever with the old alpha drive I had. The orientation is the same, so it is not the spline cut on the shift lever. I would suggest the shift shaft splines are not directly in line and I would suggest this is creating the incorrect orientation. I would suggest checking the batch of shift shafts this one came from to determine my theory. This is based on the removal of the new shift shaft and replacing it with the old alpha drive shift shaft and the orientation at 12:00 is exactly what you suggest.

So you put your old shaft in, and now you get the proper orientation? I will check our stock here and see if there is any issue.

Yes, That is correct. The old shift shaft oriented correctly. Please let me know what you find out.

Tech Support, I am still waiting to hear from you regarding the shift shaft issue. You indicated that you would look into it and get back to me but that was some time ago.

Wer have not seen any issue here. If you want to mail the one you have back to me, we can take a look at it. It seems to be a one off issue, so maybe that piece was a setup piece that accidently got thrown in with the good pieces.

                    New se106 No shifting Problems

I just put a new se106 in. This is my first se106 unit. I did not have to adjust the shift cable at all, shifts the same as my old merc. 140 hp outdrive. One thing I did find out is my shift cutout switch was gone and this helps the drive come out of gear underload. So tied to dock in gear the new drive did not want to come out of gear as good as the old one. However not tied to dock the drives shifted the same and no shift cable adjusment was needed.
Ran the outdrive about 1 hrs, little noisy but this was expected. Small amount of metal on the magnetic plug which I cleaned off.

I am now in the process of installing a new shift cutout assembly. I had to remote mount the new assembly because these are not direct replacements for some outdrives.

My next trip is 4th of july ocean fishing, plan to run the boat 4-7 days, probably 6-8yrs per day of trolling/running. Will plan on changing oil at the 10-15 hr mark.
