  • Shifting problem

I have a SEI 106 and am having trouble shifting from neutral - forward - neutral - reverse with consistancy. Sometimes it shifts, sometimes not.
I have taken the cables off and they appear fine.

When I do get it into forward and raise the lower unit it kicks it out of gear.

Did the problem start as soon as you put the new drive on, or did it work for awhile before that?

      Shifting Problem

It did work for two years. I was advised last night to replace the transom shifting cable as it is the most probable cause of the problem. I will try that.

If it worked for two years, then another possibility is the shift spool in the lower unit. You can check it with the drive off the boat. What you will do is lock the unit into fwd gear, and then while holding tension on the prop to keep it locked in gear, wiggle the shift shaft. The movement you are feeling is the slop in the shft sytem of the lower unit. It should be in the 3 degree range. If it moves much more than that, then it is probably the shift spool.
